Europe 2012 day 8: Munich

The next day of our trip (Sept. 11, 2012) we had a pretty low key day exploring the rest of Munich.

The beers of Germany

We walked to Marienplatz and then to the Viktualienmarkt - even though we had breakfast at the hotel we wanted to try the traditional breakfast/brunch of Weisswurst sausage.

So, at about 10:30 AM, we were sitting down with sausages, a pretzel and a beer - when in Germany!

No orange juice here, just beer!

After the food, we decided to finish our Rick Steves walking tour seeing the sights of the city.

The Theatinerkirche
Wandering around the English Gardens, there is a tunnel where the Eisbach waterway flows north from underneath Prinzregentenstrasse - the way the channel is constructed creates a big standing wave right by the tunnel, and wetsuit-clad surfers stand in line on the riverbank waiting for their turn to weave back and forth on top of it. Urban surfing!

After a little bit of lost wandering and asking a local, we found the Chinese Tower beer garden. With roughly 6000 seats, it's a sight to behold, and it was a little bit more tourist-friendly than the Augustiner garden (more English here and there), although it still seemed to be mostly populated by locals. Another tasty lunch!

The rest of the evening way a low-key one of walking around, enjoying the sites and of course eating more food!

I am so jealous of all the traveling you have done! I constantly send my husband links to your posts saying, "see... we should do this!!" He actually went to Oktoberfest in Munich a couple years ago and it sounds like it was amazing!

It's so lovely seeing Munich in the sunshine - it was March and sunny in parts but very cold when we were there. I must thank you for introducing me to Rick Steve - I always use his packing lists now. I must try out his walking tours.
